Garden seeds!

Just got off the phone with my wife's brother. He asked me if I had heard anything about BHO's idea of having a "rat patrol" (my description). I told him' 'yes I had,' but didn't know how it could work or what he had in mind for it.

Anyway he got around to asking me if I had heard there was going to be a shortage of garden seed this year. That was news to me, but he said he'd heard it locally, down in them Southern Ohio hills. Folks down there do a lot of gardening for the same reasons most of us garden.

Anyway, what do y'all think? We do keep enough seed for a lot of what we grow, but some we do buy annually. Should we do our ordering now?

With unemployment being higher than normal, it figures that more people will be putting in larger gardens this year, or putting in a garden in their back yard that will be a first for them. That could cause a shortage. It would probably readjust in a year or two, when supply catches up with demand. Unless, of course, this is it and the world goes down the tube.

Well if Iraq is any indication of what is coming our way, yes.

Quote:

As part of sweeping "economic restructuring" implemented by the Bush Administration in Iraq, Iraqi farmers will no longer be permitted to save their seeds. Instead, they will be forced to buy seeds from US corporations -- which can include seeds the Iraqis themselves developed over hundreds of years. That is because in recent years, transnational corporations have patented and now own many seed varieties originated or developed by indigenous peoples. In a short time, Iraq will be living under the new American credo: Pay Monsanto, or starve.

I did find a conflicting report:
Quote:

CLARIFICATION - February 2005 The report jointly issued by Focus on the Global South and GRAIN in October 2004 on Iraq's new patent law has received a lot of attention worldwide. It has also generated a misunderstanding that we wish to clarify. The law does not prohibit Iraqi farmers from using or saving "traditional" seeds. It prohibits them from reusing seeds of "new" plant varieties registered under the law. In practical terms, this means they cannot save those seeds for re-use either. The report has been revised to express this more clearly.

So who really knows, but it is scary nonetheless.

There was a post last week about Baker Creek seeds running out of stock. The post said they were shipping out like 200 orders a day. So to answer your question. Yes, you better get your seeds now. Too many what if's. What if the internet goes down, what if the banks go south, what if someone else bought all the seeds, Buy your seeds now!!!!
December and January are the slow time for seed sellers - NORMALLY, they are swamped now! The company I got my berry plants from said she has been swamped too.

Re: Garden seeds!

I just picked up some heirloom seeds today at a local shop. Their selection was low but still pretty good. Most places don't really start to get their big orders in till the end of Mar to beginning of Apr. Normally that is the best time to start acquiring supplies for the upcoming season but this year it may be prudent to start even earlier, which is why I was out today.

On a side note, heirloom seeds should be every ones first priority and gaining some knowledge on harvesting seeds from this years coming gardens for future years would be highly worth your time. Bx3
